Personal Statement

Prof. Dr. Kawa Abdulkareem Sherwani

I am an adaptable and determined professor who has developed the ability to lead teams in the institutions of higher education and scientific research through years of experience in working in different positions at different universities in Iraqi Kurdistan Region. Starting as a head assistant of a department around 20 years ago to be the president of a big public university. Sometimes I think of my journey as a success story, since I became the president of the same university which I was, thirty years ago, an undergraduate student at. 

As a head of translation department at Salahaddin University – Erbil and library department at Foundation of Technical Education, later on as a director of quality assurance and then as the vice president for students’ affairs at Erbil Polytechnic University, and then recently as the president of the university for the last seven years, I could develop my management, communication and problem-solving skills. 

As a teaching staff I have taught at English Language department, translation department and media department. As a researcher I have published in the fields of language and linguistics, applied linguistics, discourse analysis, media, translation and Kurdish culture. 

I have taught applied linguistics at postgraduate programs in different universities in Kurdistan, including Salahaddin University, Soran University and Duhok university, and supervised many MA and PhD thesis in linguistics, applied linguistics, translation and discourse analysis. Recently, in the new round of postgraduate studies, two of my PhD proposals on applied linguistics have been accepted at Salahaddin university.
